Axxela Limited, a foremost player in Sub-Saharan Africa’s gas and power industry, has achieved a major safety milestone—recording an impressive nine million (9,000,000) man-hours without a single Lost Time Injury (LTI) across its operations.
This accomplishment underscores the company’s deep-rooted safety culture and unwavering commitment to operational excellence.
The milestone highlights Axxela’s steady progression in embedding world-class safety protocols and systems, which have enabled it to maintain uninterrupted productivity across its facilities. It also cements the company’s status as a standard-bearer for health and safety best practices in the region’s energy sector.
“Recording 9 million hours without a lost-time injury is a powerful reflection of the deeply embedded safety culture at Axxela,” said Timothy Ononiwu, Group Chief Executive Officer of Axxela.
“It speaks to our team’s shared commitment to operational excellence, disciplined adherence to safety protocols, and collective accountability. This achievement further reinforces that safety is not just a policy—it’s a core value that shapes how we carry out operations and day-to-day activities.”
John Okoro, Axxela’s Head of Environment, Health, Safety & Sustainability, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the collective responsibility required to maintain such standards. “Our zero tolerance approach to non-compliance protects lives, preserves operations, and reflects our responsibility to all stakeholders,” he said. “This accomplishment inspires us not to relent, but to continue raising the standard.”
Axxela’s safety record has been on a consistent upward trajectory—crossing the 7 million man-hours milestone in 2023 and 8 million in early 2024.
The latest milestone coincides with the company’s broader sustainability performance, including its recent retention of the EcoVadis 2025 Gold Medal in Sustainability Rating—a testament to its integrated approach to safety, environmental stewardship, and stakeholder engagement.
Backed by Helios Investment Partners LLP and Sojitz Corporation, Axxela remains at the forefront of private-sector-led natural gas development in West Africa. It is a designated natural gas shipper on the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) and a key member of the West African Power Pool (WAPP).
Through a 400-kilometre network of natural gas pipelines and a portfolio of subsidiaries—Gaslink Nigeria Limited, Gas Network Services Limited, Central Horizon Gas Company Limited, and Transit Gas Nigeria Limited—Axxela delivers reliable and sustainable energy solutions to over 200 industrial and commercial customers.
This latest achievement reflects more than just a statistic—it signals Axxela’s ongoing mission to drive industrial growth through energy solutions grounded in safety, sustainability, and operational integrity.
