The Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) has advised women to prioritise their health, to ensure well-being and success in their endeavours.
The Commissioner of WAPA, Mrs Bolaji Dada, gave the advice during the “2024 Women Assembly for Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDA) in Lagos State” on Tuesday in Lagos.
Dada said the programme was to address key issues affecting women, particularly their health, economic empowerment and political participation.
Dada said women’s health is foundational to their overall well-being and success and an essential factor for them to thrive.
“A healthy woman is empowered to pursue her dreams, take care of her family, and contribute meaningfully to society.
“We must all take the necessary steps to care for our bodies, seek early detection for diseases, and adopt healthy habits that will sustain us for the long term,” Dada said.
The commissioner said WAPA had included a free medical screening, to enable participants to check their health status.
The screenings included blood pressure and sugar level checks, eye tests, and cervical and breast cancer screening.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme also featured lectures from health experts on nutrition and healthy living, mental health management and managing the effects of menopause.
Commenting, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, Wife of the State Governor, said the programme was designed to improve the living standards of women through sensitisation campaigns for health and socio-economic growth.
Sanwo-Olu called for unity in the advocacy for women’s rights and opportunities that would benefit women from all strata of life.
She said the opportunities should include tools and resources that would enable women, including artisans, widows, and those living with disabilities, to thrive.
Sanwo-Olu urged women to pay attention to their mental health and ensure they go for regular check-ups.
She further urged women to guard against drug abuse, not only for their children but for other youngsters within their communities.
