Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari. According to a statement from the State House, Buhari passed away at approximately 4:30 PM today in London, following a long-standing illness.
In response to the news, President Tinubu has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the late leader’s widow, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, and has instructed Vice President Kashim Shettima to immediately travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the former President’s body back to Nigeria.
As a mark of national mourning, President Tinubu has also directed that Nigerian flags be flown at half-mast; lamenting the nation has lost a towering figure in Nigeria’s political and military history.
Muhammadu Buhari, who was elected president in 2015 and re-elected in 2019, previously served as Nigeria’s military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985.
