In a show of regional solidarity, the Maritime Organisation for West and Central Africa (MOWCA) has announced plans to mobilize all 25 of its member countries to support Nigeria’s bid for a seat on the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The commitment, which reflects growing momentum behind Nigeria’s strategic leadership in maritime affairs, is aimed at securing a bloc vote during the upcoming IMO Council elections. MOWCA’s endorsement is expected to significantly bolster Nigeria’s chances in the highly competitive race for council membership.
“MOWCA is aligning its members in unity behind Nigeria,” said a senior official of the organization. “Our collective support will serve as a powerful statement of West and Central Africa’s shared interest in strengthening regional representation within global maritime governance.”
Nigeria has long been a key maritime player on the continent, with its expansive coastline, bustling ports, and growing investments in blue economy infrastructure. The country is seeking election under Category C of the IMO Council, which represents states with special interests in maritime transport or navigation.
The upcoming elections are expected to draw wide attention as countries position for influence within the IMO, the United Nations’ specialized agency responsible for regulating shipping. With MOWCA’s backing, Nigeria is poised to project its maritime voice more prominently on the international stage.
This move comes at a time when African countries are pushing for greater inclusion in global decision-making platforms. Nigeria’s campaign is being seen as a rallying point for a more unified African maritime policy agenda—one that reflects the interests and aspirations of the continent’s coastal nations.
