At the 29th World Gas Conference (WGC2025) held in Beijing, China, from May 19–23, 2025, Nigeria made headlines as the Kwale Gas Gathering (KGG) hub in Delta State received the Regional Gas Award for Africa from the International Gas Union (IGU).
This recognition shines a global spotlight on Nigeria’s efforts to reduce environmental pollution and flare gas emissions through innovative infrastructure and policy implementation. The KGG project’s award-winning submission was celebrated as a game-changing solution to long-standing gas flaring issues in the oil-rich Niger Delta.
Located in Kwale, Delta State, the KGG facility is a bold stride in the fight against gas flaring. Designed to process 300 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d), the hub captures and repurposes stranded gas from the OML56 oil cluster, previously released into the atmosphere through flaring.
By transforming waste gas into a valuable energy resource, the KGG not only protects the environment but also powers Nigeria’s domestic gas supply, supports industrial growth, and creates jobs for local communities.
The honor was received by Mr. Emeka Ene, CEO of Xenergi Limited, on behalf of the technical team behind the project. The delegation included leading voices in Nigeria’s energy sector:
- Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas)
- Mr. Olalekan Ogunleye, EVP, Gas, Power & New Energy, NNPC Ltd
- Engr. Farouk Ahmed, Chief Executive, NMDPRA
- Mr. Ed Ubong, Director, Decade of Gas Office
- Mr. Aka Nwokedi, Chairman, Nigerian Gas Association
Mr. Ene paid tribute to the multidisciplinary team, thanked government and regulatory agencies for their support, and acknowledged the pivotal role of the Decade of Gas programme in providing a platform for innovation and indigenous participation.
The KGG hub is connected to the OB-3 gas trunk line, a key component of Nigeria’s national gas infrastructure operated by the Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC) under NNPC Limited. This connection ensures that gas captured and processed by the KGG can be quickly distributed across the country.
Following the successful integration of gas from Energia/Oando JV, Ebendo, and Matsogo fields, the facility is gearing up to receive gas from other operators including First Hydrocarbon Nigeria (FHN), Pillar Oil, and Midwestern Oil & Gas. Plans are already in motion to double its capacity to 600 mmscf/d in the next development phase.
Kwale Eco-Industrial PIn a strategic move to boost sustainable industrialization, Xenergi also partnered with the Delta State Special Economic Zone (DSEZ), NNPC, and the Gas Aggregation Company of Nigeria (GACN) to launch a roadshow for the Kwale Eco-Industrial Park (KGIP) at WGC2025.
The KGIP, co-located with the KGG facility, is designed to attract gas-based industries (GBIs) that rely on cleaner energy sources—positioning Delta State as a leading hub for eco-industrial development in West Africa.
Local Impact, Global Recognition
Beyond its technological achievement, the KGG hub is delivering real benefits on the ground. The facility has generated hundreds of direct and indirect jobs for people in host and neighboring communities, affirming its role as not only an environmental solution but also a catalyst for inclusive economic growth.
The success of the KGG hub underscores Nigeria’s potential to lead in sustainable gas utilization, bridging energy access, environmental stewardship, and economic development. It also exemplifies what’s possible when government policy, industry expertise, and community engagement align toward a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
