SEEPCO Workers At Conclusion of Week-long Campaign Celebrating World Day of Safety And Health At Work 2025.
Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited (SEEPCO) has announced an industry defining initiative as it positions to launch a suite of digital health and safety solutions; underscoring SEEPCO’s commitment to workplace safety and employee wellbeing.
According to a statement by the energy company, within the next few weeks, it shall launch several tech-driven tools, including a real-time incident reporting system, a digital Unsafe Act and Unsafe Condition (UAUC) tool, and an electronic Permit to Work (e-PTW) system. These innovations are designed to improve transparency, regulatory compliance, and response times.
The company announced this at the conclusion of a week-long celebration as it marked the 22nd observance of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, established by the International Labour Organization (ILO) held globally every year on April 28.
Affirming its commitment to the tenets of the world day for safety, SEEPCO held a series of activities from April 20 to April 26 under the theme “Revolutionizing Health and Safety: The Role of AI and Digitalization at Work.” The initiative aimed to explore how emerging technologies can transform safety practices in high-risk industries like oil and gas.
Employees across SEEPCO’s operational locations actively participated in a range of activities including health walks, safety-themed lectures, leadership-led demonstrations, and awareness sessions on physical health and site-specific safety challenges. The campaign also featured a keynote on the integration of AI in workplace safety and digital transformation.
Interestingly, SEEPCO had through the year 2024 previously undertaken numerous proactive safety campaigns in line with its Health, Safety, Environment, and Fire (HSEF) goals. These included training on construction work safety, working at heights, fire drills, confined space entry protocols, alcohol testing for accident prevention, and seasonal risk awareness, such as lightning strike prevention.
In announcing the upcoming launch of its tech-driven digital safety suite of solutions, SEEPCO stated that this transformation will be achieved through advanced HSEF (Health, Safety, Environment, and Fire) data analytics, artificial intelligence, and predictive monitoring, strengthening SEEPCO’s ability to anticipate and prevent incidents while empowering employees to play an active role in building a safer, smarter workplace. These initiatives are not just about automation; they are about empowerment, giving every employee the tools to make better decisions, prevent harm, and continuously improve.
Further reinforcing its focus on professional development, SEEPCO disclosed it had facilitated specialized training for staff through internationally accredited agencies. A notable example was the National Training Course on Nucleonic Gauging Equipment and Radiation Safety, conducted in partnership with the National Institute of Radiation Protection and Research (NIRPR) at the University of Ibadan. This initiative certified several employees as Radiation Safety Officers.
Additionally, SEEPCO advanced its sustainability agenda by hosting a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Management Awareness Training for about 50 employees, helping build internal capabilities for regulatory compliance and environmental stewardship.
To boost emergency preparedness, the company partnered with the Lagos State Fire Service for a joint emergency drill, enhancing coordination and operational readiness for potential crises.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Moses Ngwoke, Manager, HSEF of SEEPCO reiterated that safety is more than a priority—it is a core company value. “We are embracing innovation and digitalization to revolutionize our approach to health and safety,”said Ngwoke. “Our commitment is unwavering—to protect lives, enhance wellbeing, and build a resilient workforce for the future.”he concluded
Founded in 2003, SEEPCO has integrated safety into every aspect of its operations across Nigeria. The company was one of the few firms from Nigeria’s 2005 licensing round to achieve first oil within two years—a notable feat given the operational challenges in the region. Today, SEEPCO remains one of Africa’s fastest-growing oil exploration and production companies, distinguished by its resilience, innovation, and commitment to sustainable growth.
