FRSC Partners Police to Suspend Checkpoints at Onitsha During Festive Season

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), says checkpoints would be suspended at the Onitsha end of the Niger bridge to ensure free flow of traffic during the yuletide.

The Anambra State Sector Commander, FRSC, Mrs Joyce Alexander, made this known in an interview with newsmen.

Alexander was highlighting some proactive steps the corps is taking to addressing potential traffic challenges during the festivities.

The sector commander said that the corps had requested for assistance from the Anambra State Police Commissioner, Nnaghe Obono-Itam, to suspend checkpoints.

“As part of efforts to ensure smooth traffic flow at the Onitsha head bridge during the festive period, we will be collaboration with the Anambra and Delta State Police Commands.

“The CP invited his Delta State counterpart, CP B.S. Oluwafemi, to join us for an on-site assessment of both bridges at Onitsha to address potential traffic challenges,”she said.

According to her the suspension will take effect from, Dec. 18 to Jan. 10, 2025, adding that this was one of the measures to be implemented as part of the collaboration.

“The police will also implement establishment of mobile surveillance at the 2nd Niger Bridge axis and dismantle checkpoints on the Delta side of the old Niger Bridge to facilitate free traffic flow.

“There will be provision of police officers for joint traffic control efforts with the FRSC during the yuletide season,” she said.

Alexander assured the public of FRSC’s commitment to ensuring the safety of road users during and after the festive period.

She urged motorists to cooperate with traffic management personnel and follow all traffic rules and regulations.
