In a bid to combat the spread of tuberculosis (TB), hypertension, diabetes and other health-related issues, the Chairman of Epe Local Government of Lagos State, Nigeria, Princess Surah Animashaun has organised a free health screening exercise for residents of Epe Local Government Council.
The two-day screening exercise held recently at the Epe Local Government Secretariat, saw a significant turnout, with numerous residents undergoing thorough examinations for tuberculosis (TB), blood pressure check (BP), Blood Sugar Screening and Free Chest X-ray.
Delivering her address at the opening ceremony of the screening programme, themed: “End TB, Stop TB”, the Executive Chairman of Epe Local Government, Princess Surah Animashaun said the initiative is to showcase the government’s commitment to providing accessible, quality healthcare services and promote community well-being.
Princess Animashaun emphasised the importance of this campaign, stating that lack of awareness has continued to pose threats to residents of the council, state, and Nigeria at large. She encouraged residents to take advantage of the opportunity to get screened and learn more about tuberculosis prevention.
According to the Chairman, the event’s theme reflects the government’s commitment to eliminating and controlling the spread of Tuberculosis in the council area, state, and country.
“Our administration has prioritised quality healthcare services to Epe residents. Tuberculosis is a major public health concern in Nigeria, and Epe is not left out in the rising scourge of tuberculosis, high blood pressure, diabetes and chest pain among Nigerians; hence, the free screening programme that will fundamentally help checkmate the potential spread of the communicable disease”, Animashaun said.
In his remarks, the Medical Officer of Health at MOH, Dr. Adeleke Awolesi said health is wealth and commended the Chairman for her laudable initiatives in the health sector in Epe LGA, noting that screening of residents for tuberculosis, hypertension diabetes and other ailments would go a long way in mitigating health issues of the residents.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Modupe Lawal, said, “I want to thank the Chairman (Iya Epe) for bringing this health screening to our doorstep. After my registration, I was screened for tuberculosis, hypertension and diabetes and even had my chest X-ray. I saw so many people with different ailments, and some people were even given reference letters to various hospitals for treatment”.
Another beneficiary, Mrs. Aribike Salami prayed for the Chairman for her various humanitarian programmes for the people of Epe. This, she said, is another laudable health programme for Epe residents.
“I am very happy to have been screened, and today I know my health status. I don’t have any TB, hypertension or even diabetes, and my blood sugar is equally normal”, she said.
Mr. Kabir Adelu was also full of praise as he was screened, saying, “Someone informed me of the screening exercise and I thank God I was screened. I pleaded with the Chairman to include eye screening in any other health screening exercise and extend this to those in the riverine areas of Epe Local Government”.
