The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has distributed 1,674 metric tonnes of food items to Lagos State to alleviate the high cost of food in the country.
The food items distributed include:
- 780 metric tonnes of maize, equivalent to 15,600 bags of 50 kg.
- 800 metric tonnes of sorghum, equivalent to 16,000 bags of 50 kg.
- 94 metric tonnes of garri, equivalent to 3,760 bags of 25 kg.
Speaking at the event, NEMA Director-General Hajia Zubaida Umar, represented by the Zonal Director for the Southwest, Mr. Steven Adewale, stated that this distribution is part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
This initiative aims to reduce the impact of the current economic downturn.
Umar expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for fulfilling his promise by approving the release of 42,000 metric tonnes of food commodities from the national strategic reserve, managed by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.
“The assorted food commodities include maize, sorghum, and garri. These items will be distributed across all local government areas in the state. Based on the president’s directives, 20% of the food items will be given to religious organizations, while 3% will be allocated to boarding schools in all local governments in the state,” Umar said.
Dr. Rasheed Macauley, Head of Veterinary Services, received the items on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture and expressed gratitude to the federal government.
He requested additional commodities for Lagos, considering its large population.
One of the recipients, Mrs. Victory Olaleye, also expressed her gratitude to both the federal and state governments for their support.
