Aiteo Eastern Exploration and Production Company Limited (AEEPCO) has announced the resumption of oil production in the Nembe field.
This follows the completion of a joint investigation into a recent oil leak at the site. It would be recalled that a few days back, the Nembe Oil field was shut down due to a reported oil spill. The leak is alleged to have occurred at a section of the 97 kilometer Nembe Creek Trunk line (NCTL) that hitherto fed the Bonny Oil Export Terminal in Rivers.
According to a statement by the company obtained by EAM, AEEPCO says they’ve addressed the leak and implemented new safety protocols to prevent future occurrences. The company also stated their commitment to transparency and accountability by engaging with regulators, local communities, and stakeholders.
Victor Okoronkwo, the Group Managing Director of AEEPCO, provided an update as a result: “We are happy to announce the restart of production activities following a thorough assessment of our operations and infrastructure at the Nembe Swamp Field. Our committed team has put in a lot of effort to resolve the problems brought about by the most recent incident and has put in place improved safety procedures to stop it from happening again.
“To guarantee accountability and openness at all times, we have interacted with stakeholders, local communities, and regulatory organizations”, emphasized Mr Okoronkwo.
Following persistent vandalism on the oil export line which has a capacity to evacuate 180,000 barrels of crude daily, Aiteo resorted to using barges to convey crude from the Nembe fields.
The barges are used to transport crude from onshore oil wells to a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel from which Aiteo exports the Nembe Crude blend to crude tankers.
