National Sustainability Achievements Awards Celebrate Trailblazers Driving Nigeria’s Green Transition
Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company (SEEPCO) Ltd, was on Thursday, May 22 in Lagos, honoured with the Outstanding Oil and Gas Company Award at the 2025 National Sustainability Achievements Awards.
Hosted by ESG Impact Consulting Ltd with the theme “Nigeria’s Green Transition Efforts & Climate Change Revolution,” the prestigious event spotlighted organizations redefining Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) leadership across Nigeria’s corporate landscape.
As one of Africa’s fastest-growing exploration and production companies, Sterling Oil stood out for its groundbreaking commitment to environmental stewardship, innovation, and sustainable growth. The company’s ambitious green energy transition agenda has become a model for the industry—showcasing how responsible energy development can drive positive change across ecosystems and communities.
Sterling Oil’s sustainability portfolio includes the conversion of over 90% of its vehicle fleet to compressed natural gas (CNG), significantly lowering carbon emissions. In its marine operations, the company has upgraded its barge fleet to double-hull structures, offering enhanced protection for aquatic environments. Its flare gas reduction programme has also made major strides by reclaiming and repurposing waste gas into usable energy.
The company’s integrated recycling infrastructure enables on-site processing of up to 100 kg of waste per hour, while its afforestation initiative aims to plant 10,000 trees annually. This is supported by over 1,000 sqm of green net infrastructure and the nurturing of more than 25,000 seedlings, many of which are native species. With a tree survival rate of 60%–80%, Sterling Oil’s reforestation programme is one of the most effective in the region.
During the awards ceremony, Mr. David Walker, Head of Operations and Human Resources at Sterling Oil, expressed the company’s gratitude:
“At Sterling Oil, we believe true success is defined by the legacy we build through sustainable practices. This award is a testament to the collective efforts of our teams and our unwavering commitment to leaving a positive imprint on the planet.”
The 2025 awards also recognized other sustainability frontrunners such as Dangote Sugar, Dabur Herbal Clove Gel Toothpaste, Ikeja Hotels Plc, Africa Prudential Plc, BUA Foods, and GREE. Yet Sterling Oil’s recognition served as a defining highlight—underscoring the growing role of oil and gas firms in advancing Nigeria’s low-carbon, inclusive energy future.
Mr. Dada Ajai-Ikhile (ARPA), Chairman of the Organizing Committee, stated in his opening remarks:
“Sterling Oil exemplifies what it means to lead in the face of climate challenges. Their bold actions in energy sustainability and ecological responsibility set a powerful example for the rest of the industry.”
The event featured thought leadership panels and discussions on data-driven ESG strategy, climate resilience, and innovations shaping Nigeria’s path to net-zero.
Hosted annually by ESG Impact Consulting Ltd., the National Sustainability Achievements Awards is a flagship platform celebrating corporate ESG excellence and inspiring nationwide action.
As ‘SEEPCO’ celebrates this landmark recognition, it presents a clear message: Africa’s energy future must be clean, resilient, and driven by accountability.
With partners, stakeholders, and government support, the company remains committed to being among the leaders of Africa’s clean energy transformation.
