- Refinery currently operating at 70percent Capacity
The Board and Management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) express their sincere gratitude to Nigerians for their continued support and enthusiasm regarding the safe and successful restart of the 60,000 barrels-per-day Old Port Harcourt Refinery.
In a statement released moments ago by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, Femi Soneye, this achievement marks a significant milestone after years of operational challenges and underperformance.
The statement observed there were misleading claims from certain quarters which suggested that the refinery is not producing products.
Emphasizing the opposite however, the NNPC reaffirmed that the Port Harcourt Refinery is currently operating at 70% of its installed capacity, with plans to increase this to 90%. The refinery’s daily production includes the following outputs:
- Straight-Run Gasoline (Naphtha), which is blended into 1.4 million liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS or petrol)
- Kerosene: 900,000 liters
- Automotive Gas Oil (AGO or Diesel): 1.5 million liters
- Low Pour Fuel Oil (LPFO): 2.1 million liters
- Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG): Additional volumes
The refinery utilizes crack C5, a blending component sourced from Indorama Petrochemicals (formerly Eleme Petrochemicals), to produce gasoline that meets the necessary specifications. Blending is a standard practice in refineries worldwide, as no single unit can produce gasoline that fully complies with all country-specific standards without such processes.
“Furthermore, we have made significant progress on the new Port Harcourt Refinery, which is expected to begin operations shortly, without prior announcements”, noted Soneye.
“We encourage Nigerians to focus on the positive achievements being made under the strong and progressive leadership of President Bola Tinubu, GCFR, and to continue supporting efforts that aim to bring further benefits to the nation. Malicious attacks against clear progress only serve to undermine the significant advances made by NNPC Ltd. and the country as a whole.
“Let us continue working together to build a more resilient and self-sufficient energy sector”, he concluded.
