“Since I graduated from the institute, I have made over N700,000 in installation fees”
“I have made over N400,000”
PWDs should be considered in the energy transition discourse
It was testimony galore as AEI Alumni showcased the significant financial benefits they have gained from their training in solar photovoltaic (PV) installations. Testimonials highlighted impressive earnings, with one alumnus reporting over N700,000 in installation fees, another over N400,000, and a third sharing that they are now training four installers.
The event, themed “Alumni Experience in the Off-Grid Revolution,” not only celebrated these achievements but also introduced a N10 million no-interest credit facility, announced by Dr. Sunny Akpoyibo, founder of the AEI. This credit facility aims to support alumni as they expand their businesses as solar PV installers, project developers, or franchise partners of the Asteven brand.
Held virtually, the meeting provided a platform for alumni to learn from industry experts about the numerous opportunities available in the renewable energy sector. As the global focus shifts toward sustainable energy solutions, the AEI has established itself as a leader in training skilled professionals to meet the rising demand for solar energy in Nigeria.
The meeting sought to foster collaboration among alumni from diverse backgrounds. Keynote speakers shared insights on various topics, including the importance of customer service in retaining clients, presented by business coach Ms. Natalie Collins. She emphasized the need to provide value while maintaining strong customer relations for sustainable business growth.
A critical highlight was announcement of the formation of a group to represent the interests of Persons With Disabilities (PWDS) in the Nigerian Renewable Energy Space
Prof. Magnus Onuoha, President of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Associations Alliance (REEEAA), discussed the diverse career paths available in the renewable energy sector, encouraging alumni to explore roles beyond technical positions, such as project management and policy development.
Dr. Segun Adaju, a director at AEI, addressed the importance of funding for renewable energy projects, outlining available grants and effective application strategies to empower alumni in pursuing innovative initiatives.
Women’s empowerment in the renewable energy sector was also a focal point. Chief Mrs. Anita Okuribido, President of Women in Renewable Energy Nigeria, highlighted the unique challenges women face and advocated for initiatives to promote gender equality within the industry.
Dr. Paul Abolo emphasized the critical link between renewable energy and climate change, discussing how solar energy can alleviate energy poverty while combating climate change. His insights aimed to equip alumni to advocate for sustainable policies effectively.
Overall, the Asteven Energy Institute’s Alumni Experience provided transformative opportunities for personal and professional growth, fostering connections that can lead to collaborations and job opportunities. Alumni shared success stories of launching solar installation businesses and community energy projects, illustrating the real impact trained professionals can have in their communities.
Interestingly, the Institute has a number of firsts to its name. The curriculum was jointly developed by a team of frontline practitioners, who understudied global training institutes in Germany and Kenya.
It is the only facility for solar pv vocational training in Nigeria accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the only licensed examination centre in Nigeria for the Ecowas Certification for Sustainable Energy Skills (ECSES), a regional standard comparable to installation certifications across the world. AEI also enjoys the distinction of being the only accredited institute in Nigeria to offer a National Universities Commission (NUC), JAMB licensed National Innovation Diploma (NID) in Solar PV and Renewable Energy.
All these certifications speak to the preparedness and the deliberate focus of the institute to ensure quality training comparable to any found outside the country. The Alumni meeting encapsulates this vision, as it encouraged a culture of lifelong learning, emphasizing the need for alumni to stay informed about industry trends and advancements.
The AEI management are driven to ensure that the contributions of AEI alumni extend beyond their individual successes; for the alumni to significantly impact their communities and advocate for policies that support renewable energy development, contributing to economic growth and energy security.
As the world embraces renewable energy as a viable solution to climate change and energy poverty, the Asteven Energy Institute is at the forefront of this movement, equipping its alumni with the skills, knowledge, and networks needed to thrive in the renewable energy sector. Together, they are shaping their careers and contributing to a sustainable future.
