The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has formally disclaimed a deceptive video circulating online which falsely claims the company is promoting a poverty alleviation and investment scheme.
In a statement issued by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, the company condemned the video as fraudulent and misleading, warning the public not to engage with or share the content.
The video, which was first posted by a Facebook account identified as Mensageiro de Cristo, features an AI-generated clone of the voice of the Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Bayo Bashir Ojulari, falsely endorsing a bogus financial opportunity.
“NNPC Ltd categorically states that it has no such investment or poverty alleviation initiative and distances itself from the content and intent of the said video,” the statement read.
The company noted that the use of deepfake and synthetic media to mislead Nigerians not only undermines public trust but also poses a serious risk of financial fraud and misinformation.
NNPC Ltd has warned that the individuals or groups behind this criminal impersonation will be pursued through appropriate legal channels.
As Nigeria’s state-owned energy company, NNPC Ltd emphasized its commitment to transparency and urged the public to rely only on verified official communications disseminated through its authorized media platforms.
