Ahead of the Stakeholders’ forum which is scheduled to hold in the five divisions of the State, the Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Housing and Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Agency (LASRERA), is seeking the support and collaboration of Traditional Rulers across the State.
Speaking with members of the Council of Traditional rulers today at the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, the Special Adviser (Housing) to Mr. Governor, Hon. (Barr.) Barakat Odunuga Bakare disclosed that LASRERA as an Agency will soon embark on a Stakeholders forum/Grassroots Advocacy to sensitise Lagosians on the 2015 Tenancy Law which permits agents to charge only between 0% and 10% as agency fees.
Hon. Odunuga-Bakare stressed the need to carry Traditional rulers along, as well as seek their collaboration, blessings and buy-in before the commencement of the Stakeholders forum/Grassroots Advocacy.
According to the Special Adviser, the Traditional rulers are the closest to residents in the State; hence the need to formally inform them ahead of the Advocacy programme.
The Special Adviser further stated that the Lagos State Government, under the able leadership of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is not only out to protect tenants against fraudulent and unscrupulous agents, but also to protect landlords and property owners as well.
She, therefore, called on landlords, tenants and property owners to visit the LASRERA Office when there are unresolved issues
Also speaking at today’s meeting, Permanent Secretary (Housing) Engr. Abdul Hafeez Toriola opined that the upcoming stakeholders’/Advocacy programme is in response to a series of complaints from members of the Public about charges from Lawyers and agents. He disclosed that some of them charge up to 100%.
He said the Lagos State Government is set to embark on a sensitisation programme from Local Government to Local Government to educate Lagosians on their rights and emphasised the need to carry Traditional Rulers along ahead of the sensitisation programme.
