A Political Advocacy Group, Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) have praised the Federal Government’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative for its growing impact on Nigeria’s energy and transportation sectors.
In a statement released on Friday, April 18, 2025, TMV Chairman, Mr. Chukwudi Enekwechi, highlighted the initiative’s success in attracting significant private sector investment and driving job creation across the country.
According to Enekwechi, the initiative has garnered an impressive N760 billion—approximately $491 million—in private investment within just one year. This, the group noted, underscores growing confidence in the Federal Government’s push for alternative, cleaner, and more affordable energy sources following the removal of fuel subsidies at the start of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“The CNG initiative has not only made transportation more affordable for many Nigerians, but has also become a magnet for private capital,” TMV stated. “Its success is a testament to the foresight behind the government’s decision to promote natural gas as a viable alternative to premium motor spirit (PMS).”
Citing data from Mr. Michael Oluwagbemi, Programme Director of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), the group revealed that over 84,000 direct and indirect jobs have been created through the program. Furthermore, CNG conversion centres have expanded rapidly—from just seven at inception to more than 200 nationwide—with plans to scale up to 10,000 centres by the end of 2025.
TMV also commended the Federal Government for providing 405 CNG-powered buses to alleviate transportation challenges for Nigerian workers. The deployment was part of a broader agreement with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) during recent wage negotiations.
“The initiative is pragmatic and has the potential to significantly reduce unemployment, drive economic growth, and enhance mobility for everyday Nigerians,” the group added.
Looking ahead, TMV urged programme managers to intensify efforts to ensure that the full benefits of the initiative are felt across the country. They expressed optimism about the proposed expansion of the program to 25 sites across 15 states, in line with current government commitments.
“The signs are promising,” the group said. “With continued focus and delivery, the CNG initiative could transform Nigeria’s energy landscape and bring long-term relief to millions of citizens.”
