On April 9, 2025, Engr. Azeez Agoro was officially inaugurated as the new Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (NIEE), Lagos Chapter, alongside new state executives with the mandate to pilot the affairs of the NIEE for the next two years.
In his first public remarks following the inauguration, Engr. Agoro outlined a clear and purposeful agenda for his tenure—one centered on elevating awareness and advocacy for environmental engineering and sustainable practices in Nigeria.
Speaking exclusively to Environment Africa Magazine (EAM) shortly after the ceremony, Engr. Agoro emphasized the urgent need to shift public perception and professional focus toward environmental management. “People often take environmental issues for granted,” he stated. “There’s a need to support the government’s efforts and actively engage in increasing awareness around good environmental practices.”
He noted that environmental engineering has long remained in the background of Nigeria’s broader engineering landscape, often overshadowed by sectors like construction, oil and gas. However, under his leadership, the NIEE Lagos Chapter aims to bring environmental engineering to the forefront of national discourse and development.
“Our administration’s core focus is to boost environmental consciousness across all levels,” Agoro explained. “We intend to achieve this through seminars, stakeholder engagements, workshops, and by building stronger connections with students and younger professionals. The intergenerational collaboration is crucial for driving real, lasting change.”
He further stressed that meaningful transformation must begin with awareness. “Before change can happen, people must first understand that change is necessary. Once the message is clear and well-communicated, implementation becomes more feasible.”
Engr. Agoro’s vision is rooted in inclusive engagement—bringing together professionals, government agencies, academic institutions, and the next generation of engineers to ensure that environmental issues are not only addressed but championed through strategic collaboration and informed action. As an Operational Excellence (OE) Assurance Adviser at Chevron Nigeria Limited, Engr Agoro is uniquely positioned to stimulate compliance to environmental standards.
As the NIEE Lagos Chapter enters this new phase under Engr. Agoro’s leadership, stakeholders and observers alike will be watching closely, and contributing positively, to ensure these promises translate into measurable progress.
