At the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), hosted by the Kenyan Government, Nigeria presented its ongoing efforts to combat climate change.
The Honorable Minister of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, delivered the message on behalf of the Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
During his address, the Minister commended the President of Kenya, Dr. William Samoei Ruto, for his leadership in steering Africa’s climate agenda. He emphasized the importance of securing climate funding from developed nations and stressed the need for strategic measures to access the climate finance pledged at previous international meetings.
The key focus areas of Nigeria’s climate strategy included:
- Leveraging the carbon market approach under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, as adopted at UNFCCC COP29 in Baku.
- Utilizing domestic financing tools, such as Sovereign Green Bonds, to fund green projects.
- Enacting and implementing policies that are tailored to domestic needs and challenges.
- Optimizing the use of natural resources while ensuring a just and equitable transition to a sustainable future.
Nigeria reaffirmed its strong commitment to supporting Africa’s climate goals, which encompass reducing emissions, mitigating pollution, halting deforestation, addressing biodiversity loss, and tackling issues such as flooding, food insecurity, and energy scarcity.
By working together, Africa and the global community can build a more sustainable future.
