- As FG Restates Commitment to Use Gas for Economic Growth, Development
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) and its partners have launched five mini-Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, marking a significant step towards deepening domestic gas utilization.
This groundbreaking initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s Gas Revolution Agenda, aiming to unlock Nigeria’s vast gas resources for economic growth and development.
The five plants – NNPC Prime LNG, NGML/Gasnexus LNG, BUA LNG, Highland LNG, and LNG Arete – boast a combined capacity of 97 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (mmscf/d).
NNPC Ltd. holds stakes in three of these plants, while the others are developed by private investors.
This public-private partnership signifies a strategic leap towards energy sufficiency, providing off-grid industrial support and contributing significantly to carbon emission reduction.
“These Mini LNG facilities will ensure the efficient transportation of gas over long distances, providing a cleaner and cheaper source of energy to households, mobility, industries, and businesses,” stated Mele Kyari, GCEO of NNPC Ltd. He emphasized that this is particularly crucial for regions lacking access to gas pipeline infrastructure.
The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, hailed the development as an unprecedented feat in the Nigerian oil and gas industry. He reiterated the government’s commitment to harnessing the nation’s abundant gas resources for economic growth and reducing carbon emissions.
Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, expressed gratitude for the project’s location in the state, emphasizing that it will create numerous employment opportunities for the local population. He assured the state government’s full support for the project’s successful implementation.
Chief Pius Akinyelure, Chairman of NNPC Ltd., highlighted that this milestone marks a significant advancement in Nigeria’s energy sector, aligning with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and signaling a new era of sustainable energy and industrial growth.
The launch of these mini-LNG plants represents a crucial step towards achieving energy security, fostering economic growth, and creating a brighter future for Nigeria. By leveraging its vast gas reserves, Nigeria can unlock significant economic potential and improve the lives of its citizens.
