WaterAid Nigeria in collaboration with Ikorodu North LCDA with the support of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Wednesday, Dec. 18, inaugurated WASHCOM Federation for the sustainability of WASH projects in the LCDA.
The event saw the inauguration of 40 WASH communities (WASHCOM) into the Federation.
Speaking at the event, Mr Godfrey Iloha, WASH Manager, WaterAid Nigeria, said that the journey started in November.
Iloha said that the goal of the Federation was to ensure the maintenance and sustainability of the WASH projects done within Ikorodu North LCDA.
According to him, the inauguration of the WASHCOM Federation in Ikorodu North is the first of its kind in Lagos State.
He noted that the Federation could be leveraged on by the state to drive home the WASH agenda for the state.
Also, the Executive Secretary of Ikorodu North LCDA, Mr Niyi Odugbesi, said that the purpose of the Federation was to ensure the maintenance and sustainability of the projects executed within the LCDA.
Odugbesi said that the LCDA is proud of the Federation and the council believes that the Federation would do the needful by ensuring that the projects executed in the LCDA lasts for a long time.
Also speaking, Prince Adeniran Ogunbanwo, the WASHCOM Federation Chairman for Ikorodu North LCDA, said that Ikorodu North LCDA has about 40 WASHCOM.
Ogunbanwo said that the Federation is vested with bringing all the WASHCOM under one umbrella in the area of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene facility.
He said that there wouldl be a formal registration of the Federation in the State, Federal and Local Government levels so that all activities across the three tiers of government would be inclusive of the Federation.
“We are vested with the responsibiliy of monitoring all the WASH projects in Ikorodu North.
“We work out ways to resolve the challenges of facilities that have problems; liase with the contractors that built the facilities so that they can be put to use again.
“We will be organising workshops, seminars and visit those facilities to ensure that they are in good working conditions,” Ogunbanwo said.
Newsmen reports that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is supporting the “Strengthening Water and Sanitation Delivery Project” in Ikorodu North LCDA.
The project seeks to reach a total of 13,000 persons in Lagos with clean water, improved sanitation and hygiene promotion activities.
