Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has signed the Lagos Electricity Bill 2024 into law, a pivotal move aimed at achieving 24-hour electricity supply across the state. The new law enables Lagos to autonomously generate, transmit, and distribute power, in line with the provisions of the Electricity Act 2023.
The signing ceremony, held at the Lagos House in Ikeja on Tuesday, was announced by Gboyega Akosile, the governorβs Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, through his official X handle. He noted that the decision aligns with the Federal Government’s 2023 directive allowing states to independently generate and distribute electricity.
The Lagos State House of Assembly had previously conducted a public hearing on July 9, 2024, gathering input from stakeholders before advancing the bill to its final stage of approval.
The Lagos Electricity Bill 2024 replaces the Lagos State Electric Power Sector Reform Law of 2018 and establishes the Lagos Electricity Market (LEM), creating a comprehensive legal framework for its regulation.
Additionally, the law delegates regulatory authority from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to Lagos State’s electricity agency, granting the state full powers to regulate, generate, transmit, and distribute electricity for its residents.
