The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has launched a channelization project aimed at alleviating flooding in 17 communities across Rivers and Bayelsa states.
According to the commission, work has already begun along Kolo Creek, covering communities from Okarki-Otuogidi in Rivers State to Ogbia in Bayelsa.
During the project’s groundbreaking ceremony in Okarki, Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, NDDC Managing Director, Samuel Ogbuku highlighted the initiative’s potential to significantly reduce flooding in the area, particularly along the East-West Road, and mitigate its impact on surrounding communities. He added that the project would also foster local commerce, enhance aquatic life, and help prevent waterborne diseases in the region.
While acknowledging the substantial costs involved, Ogbuku emphasized that the long-term benefits for the communities far outweighed the expenses. “We have commenced the project and are committed to completing it on schedule,” he affirmed. The channelization of Kolo Creek, a vital waterway serving communities in both Rivers and Bayelsa, is in direct response to urgent requests from local leaders to remove blockages that posed serious risks if left unaddressed.
Victor Antai, NDDC Executive Director of Projects, described the creek channelization as a key initiative, reflecting the priorities of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda through impactful, life-changing projects.
Elijah Harry Aduan, the traditional ruler of Okarki, expressed gratitude to the NDDC for its decisive action on the Kolo Creek issue.
In recognition of the NDDC’s efforts, the royal family bestowed a chieftaincy title upon Ogbuku, naming him “Itonji Oka-Akie I” (Light of the People) of Okarki Kingdom.
