At an industry forum held earlier today, 24th September, 2024, the Major Energy Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN), has emphasized the need to foster competition and collaboration towards enhancing Nigeria’s energy security.
Rising from the briefing, MEMAN has identified Electric Vehicles (EVs), Adoption of local refining and Energy diversity as critical solutions which need to be embedded into Nigeria’s energy transition drive.
According to MEMAN, EVs are critical to addressing climate change, reducing
emissions, and enhancing energy security.
Different types of EVs—Battery
Electric Vehicles (BEVs), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), and Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs)—and their potential role in Nigeria’s energy landscape were identified.
It was noted that while challenges remain, such as high initial costs and limited charging infrastructure, ongoing
technological innovations in the EV space, including solid-state batteries, wireless charging, and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, are expected to ease adoption.
MEMAN noted that the transition to EVs is essential for sustainability, and MEMAN remains committed to promoting this transformation alongside traditional energy sources.
Appreciating the transformation of Nigeria into an African refining powerhouse, accolades were also given for the significant strides made by public and private entities alike, including: the opening of Dangote Refinery, the development of modular refineries; all of which represent critical steps toward securing Nigeria’s energy future.
Mr Huub Stokman, Chairman of MEMAN
noted that while initial start-up challenges are inevitable, these refineries will shape the country’s energy landscape for decades to come.
Concluding the forum, MEMAN reiterated its steadfastness in its commitment to ensuring the delivery of affordable, high-quality energy products in a safe, sustainable, and competitive environment.
Fair competition is critical to driving progress and innovation within the industry, advocates MEMAN.
The association emphasized the importance of maintaining an environment where competition can thrive, as it encourages efficiency, reduces costs, and ensures consumers have access to the best possible energy solutions.
