The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) and the Center for Science and Environment (CSE) on Wednesday, 26th June 2024, successfully concluded a two-day consultation meeting to review and update the Environmental Audit Guidelines.
The meeting, held at NESREA’s headquarters in Abuja, aimed to align the guidelines with current environmental realities and best practices.
The Director General of NESREA, Dr. Innocent Barikor, expressed his appreciation to CSE for their support, stating that the revised document will significantly enhance the auditing process for the regulated community.
“The updated guidelines will ensure a more robust and effective environmental auditing process, driving compliance and sustainability in Nigeria,” Dr. Barikor said.
Dr. Barikor explained that the review was necessary to refine and enhance the guidelines, accommodating sector growth and emerging trends. The goal, he said, is to produce comprehensive and practical guidelines that improve compliance monitoring and auditing of facilities.
Mr. Nitvit Kumar Yadav, Director of Industry and Pollution Programme at CSE, highlighted the importance of environmental audits in evaluating facilities’ compliance with environmental laws and generating data for policy decisions. He emphasized the need for dynamic guidelines that reflect the evolving environmental landscape.
The successful collaboration between NESREA and CSE demonstrates their commitment to enhancing environmental governance and promoting sustainability in Nigeria.
