The Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers, NIEE, have harped on the critical importance of Water and its profound connection to Peace and Harmony.
This was stated by the NIEE National Chairman, Engr Nureni Ogunyemi at a Press Conference commemorating the 2024 World Water Day.
According to Engr Ogunyemi, this year’s commemoration “provides an opportunity to rally together and make meaningful differences in bothour communities and the world”.
“Water, as we all know, is a universal necessity. It sustains life, nurtures growth, and fosters prosperity”.
“However, access to clean water remains a luxury for far too many than we can imagine. In numerous regions, water scarcity exacerbates tensions and fuels conflicts, threatening the stability and well-being of the entire population”
Water for Peace
Available Data from the United Nations states that 153 countries worldwide depend on water that crosses national borders.
However, only 24 countries have cooperation agreements for all their shared water.
Water is not just a source of life; it is also a powerful force for peace.
Access to clean water is a fundamental human right, yet, millions around the world still lack access to safe drinking water and sanitation.
This scarcity often leads to conflict, as communities compete for dwindling water resources.
Amid these challenges lies a beacon of hope – the potential of water to unite us in a common cause.
Call to Action
Expressing a Call to Action, the NIEE Chairman and Association has launched a global campaign on “Water for Peace,”.
The campaign calls on everyone – individuals, families, companies, and governments – to join hands and take action.
“Together, we can pave the way for a more harmonious society by cooperating on water-related initiatives”, says Ogunyemi.
“Each of us has a role to play in this campaign.
- Individuals can conserve water in their daily lives, making mindful choices to reduce waste and pollution.
- Families can educate themselves and their communities about the importance of water stewardship, instilling a sense of responsibility for future generations.
- Businesses can adopt sustainable practices that minimize water usage and pollution, recognizing that responsible water management is not only good for the environment but also essential for long-term profitability and climate resilience.
- Governments can enact policies and invest in infrastructure to ensure equitable access to clean water and sanitation for all as required by the Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.
Speaking further, Ogunyemi said, “But our collective efforts must extend beyond mere rhetoric. We must translate our words into actions that bring about real change. By working together, we can address the root causes of water scarcity and conflict, forging partnerships and fostering dialogue to build a more sustainable and peaceful world”.
The NIEE National Chairman deepened the campaign call by exhorting the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, all State Governments and their respective Ministries, Departments and Agencies in charge of Water Resources on the need to ensure the adequate supply and proper use of water.
The Institution also calls for The national Assembly to be more proactive in legislating on maritme shipping and navigation.
“The Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers is always ready and willing to partner with the relevant authorities in whatever area needed”, states Ogunyemi.
“Let us all work together, the Government and the citizens, to be part of the global campaign on “Water for Peace.”
“Let us stand together, shoulder to shoulder, in solidarity with those who are most vulnerable. Together, we can make a difference. Together, we can ensure that water remains a source of life, not a source of conflict”.
