- Nigeria Police Green Initiative launched at COP28
- Ensures commitment of Security Forces to Nigeria’s Energy Transition
The Inspector General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, speaking on ‘Saving People with Environment’, at a side event at the ongoing COP28 in Dubai, has reiterated that the Nigeria Police is committed to Environmental Sustainability through the Nigeria Police Green Initiatives (NPGI).
It would be recalled that a few weeks back, the IGP announced the launch of the Nigeria Police Green Initiative, which is a multi-year campaign to deploy renewable energy measures for the Nigeria Police Force. These measures, he disclosed would take the form of utilizing gas for patrol vans, deploying electric vehicles, using renewable energy for energy and lighting as well as incorporating tree planting across the police force’s facilities.
All these, says Mr Egbetokun, would help in achieving energy reduction, fuel consumption and reduce vehicular emissions while promoting healthier police personnel and facilities across board including all police posts, police barracks and institutions.
Elaborating, the Police Boss stated that the decision to launch this initiative at COP28 was to build collaboration with like-minded organizations and drive support towards the force’s commitment to Nigeria’s Energy Transition.
Supporting the statement by the Police Boss, Dr Sunny Akpoyibo, National President of the Council for Renewable Energy Nigeria (CREN), has urged for National and International support for the ‘NPGI’, which is set to offer the most comprehensive undertaking by a security force towards renewable energy adoption in Africa.
According to Dr Akpoyibo, “It is time for us to link Climate Change to National Security and harness the opportunities for securing lives and properties in Nigeria”.
The Energy expert emphasized that the Energy Transition in Nigeria has received a big boost with the launch of NPGI, which is a significant step towards creating a more sustainable and environmentally responsive police force.
The ‘NGPI’, would not only facilitate Nigeria’s achievement of the Net Zero target but also improve the living conditions of thousands of security officers and their families, says Akpoyibo.
