The Lagos Water Corporation has appreciated the Management of Nigerian Ports Authority towards restoration/realization of Water supply in Apapa Community and its environs.
LWC, Managing Director/CEO, Engr. Muminu Adekunle Badmus made this assertion during the official handing over of 2.4Million Gallons per Day (MGD) Apapa Mini Waterworks ceremony, which took place at the LWC, Apapa Mini Waterworks today, Thursday 22nd June, 2023.
In his statement Engr. Badmus said that the Corporation sincerely appreciate the Nigerian Ports Authority for their invaluable support in rehabilitating critical components of the treatment plant, from the servicing of boreholes to the repair and painting of tanks, their collaboration has been instrumental in overcoming obstacles faced by the Waterworks.
He added that “this is a celebration of realization of a collective dream, filled with an overwhelming sense of pride and joy as we witness the fruition of our unwavering dedication.
“This transformative water facility, with a capacity to produce 2.4 million Gallons per Day, is not simply a testament to our commitment but a lifeline for the Apapa community and its neighbouring areas.
“It will serve as a reliable and sustainable source of potable water, fostering the well-being and prosperity of the community we passionately serve”.
Engr. Badmus also acknowledged the unwavering commitment of the Apapa Local Government and the dedicated members of the Apapa Residents Association, who stood firmly throughout the completion of the project.
In his address, the Nigerian Ports Authority, Managing Director, Mr. Muhammed Bello koko stated that the Nigerian Ports Authority is committed to the Sustainable Development Goal 6, “ensuring access to Water and sanitation for all”.
He added that NPA has contributed her own quota towards realization of potable water supply to the Apapa community, as parts of her Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for the improved quality of life of Apapa Residents.
Mr. Bello however, enjoined all Stakeholders to take proper/good care of the waterworks, noting that Water is Life, as there is no Life without Water.
The Chairman, Apapa Local Government, Princess Idowu Shebanjo in her contribution revealed that though presently, the Waterworks cannot pump water, as she requested that the Corporation should do the needful towards provision of reticulation line and repair of leakage pipes for the Waterworks to commence operation fully, she concluded.
Recall that the Apapa Waterworks was first constructed in 1982 under the visionary leadership of the late Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande, the former Governor of Lagos State.
In 2007, this vital infrastructure underwent rehabilitation efforts spearheaded by the indomitable Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, further bolstering its capacity.
Due to old age, among others, the Waterworks has faced numerous challenges that impeded its operations and compromised the water supply to the community.
Now, the drought period is over in Apapa Community and its environs, stated by the Chairman, Apapa Residents Development Committee, Admiral Oyagha Austin (rtd.)
