Nigeria Targets 24-Hour Power for 3 Major Economic Corridors as Power Minister Meets DisCos

• Lagos, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and Enugu-Port Harcourt corridors identified for proposed 24/7 Energy Zones

 

The Federal Government is moving to establish dedicated 24-hour electricity supply zones across three of Nigeria’s major economic corridors, as the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, held strategic talks with electricity distribution companies on how to improve power delivery to high-demand areas.

The proposed Energy Zones will cover the Lagos axis, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano corridor and Enugu-Port Harcourt axis, with the government positioning the initiative as part of efforts to provide more reliable electricity to homes, businesses and industries.

Tegbe met behind closed doors with the leadership of selected electricity distribution companies as the Federal Government works to address bottlenecks across the electricity value chain, particularly at the distribution end.

According to the Minister, Nigeria’s electricity challenge extends beyond generation and transmission, with the capacity of distribution companies to take up and deliver available electricity remaining a critical constraint.

The proposed Energy Zones are therefore intended to improve power uptake and distribution in areas with significant electricity demand, while creating room for greater commercial and industrial consumption.

The government said strengthening electricity infrastructure in these high-demand locations would also help ensure that available supply keeps pace with demand as economic activity expands.

Focus shifts to electricity delivery and demand

The initiative represents a further step in the Federal Government’s stated effort to address Nigeria’s electricity challenges through a more coordinated and sequenced approach across the power value chain.

Beyond increasing the availability of electricity, the Energy Zones concept places emphasis on the ability of the distribution network to deliver power reliably to locations where demand is already concentrated.

For DisCos, the government said stronger electricity uptake could also support improved revenue generation and collections, while businesses and industries in the targeted corridors could benefit from more predictable power supply.

The government is linking the initiative to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which identifies reliable energy supply as an important component of economic growth, industrialisation and job creation.

DisCos, energy companies join talks

The meeting was attended by representatives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), Ikeja Electric, Eko Power Ltd, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) and Sahara Energy Group.

The discussions come as the Federal Government seeks greater alignment with distribution companies on the infrastructure and operational requirements needed to establish the proposed Energy Zones and improve electricity delivery in some of Nigeria’s most commercially significant areas.
