- NNPC Ltd says the Final Investment Decision marks a major step for Nigeria’s gas development, with the offshore project expected to strengthen feedgas supply and support the expansion of NLNG’s Bonny Island operations.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has welcomed the $800 million Final Investment Decision (FID) for the Ima Gas Project, describing the development as a significant milestone for Nigeria’s upstream gas industry and a further indication of renewed investor interest in the country’s gas resources.
Developed by AMNI International in partnership with TotalEnergies, the offshore Ima Gas Project is located across Oil Mining Leases (OMLs) 112 and 117 and is expected to produce approximately 300 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMscf/d) at peak production.
A substantial portion of the project’s output is expected to provide critical feedgas for Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) as the company advances the expansion of its Bonny Island facility through Train 7.
The Train 7 expansion is designed to raise NLNG’s production capacity from 22 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) to 30 Mtpa, strengthening Nigeria’s position in the international liquefied natural gas market while creating additional demand for reliable domestic gas supply.
NNPC Ltd said the Ima FID was supported by the Presidential Directives issued in 2024, which introduced fiscal incentives for non-associated gas projects, streamlined contracting processes and helped reduce development costs.
The company said Ima is the fourth major gas project to reach FID under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following the Iseni, Ubeta and HI gas projects.
Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, described the Ima FID as a “decisive vote of confidence in Nigeria’s gas sector and in the bold reforms” aimed at establishing more competitive terms and a predictable environment for investors.
The project also highlights the growing role of partnerships between indigenous energy companies, international oil and gas majors and Nigeria’s financial institutions in unlocking capital for large-scale gas developments.
NNPC Ltd said the collaboration involving AMNI International, TotalEnergies and the Nigerian financial sector demonstrates a financing and partnership model that could support further investment in Nigeria’s upstream gas industry.
The company reiterated its commitment to working with the Federal Government, regulators, investors and other industry stakeholders to sustain investment in the sector and accelerate the development of Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources.
Beyond its contribution to gas supply, the Ima project is expected to support broader national objectives around industrialisation, energy security, employment generation and economic growth, as Nigeria seeks to increase the contribution of gas to domestic energy supply and industrial development.
The FID comes as Nigeria continues efforts to attract investment into its gas sector and convert its large gas resource base into commercially viable projects capable of supporting domestic industries, LNG production and long-term economic development.
