The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has commenced the evacuation of accumulated waste at the Cele Bus Stop axis of the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, in a fresh intervention aimed at restoring the area to an acceptable environmental condition.
The waste evacuation follows the identification of the Cele axis as a waste black spot, with LAWMA deploying an intervention team to remove the accumulated refuse and address the immediate environmental concerns around the busy transport corridor.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the Authority responded promptly to the situation, prioritising the evacuation of the waste and restoration of the affected location.
According to him, the intervention forms part of LAWMA’s continuing efforts to identify and clear waste black spots across Lagos while tackling the factors contributing to the recurrence of indiscriminate waste dumping.
Gbadegesin said the Authority would intensify monitoring of identified black spots and deploy appropriate operational resources to locations requiring urgent intervention.
The recurrence of waste accumulation at previously cleared locations remains a challenge for waste management authorities, particularly along busy transport corridors where commercial activities, pedestrian movement and vehicular traffic generate significant volumes of waste.
Gbadegesin therefore appealed to residents, traders, motorists and other users of the Cele axis to desist from indiscriminate disposal of waste, warning that repeated dumping at cleared locations could undermine efforts to maintain cleaner public spaces.
He also urged residents and businesses within the area to use approved waste disposal channels and engage accredited Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators for the proper collection and disposal of their waste.
LAWMA said monitoring of the Cele location would continue after the evacuation to discourage fresh dumping and preserve the environmental gains achieved through the intervention.
The Authority further urged residents to support its waste management efforts by adopting responsible waste disposal practices and reporting emerging waste black spots through LAWMA’s established reporting channels.
The Cele intervention comes amid broader efforts to improve solid waste management and environmental sanitation across Lagos, where the effective control of indiscriminate dumping remains critical to maintaining cleaner communities, roads and public spaces.
