Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has retained its position as Europe’s largest supplier of imported jet fuel for the second consecutive month, supplying approximately 20 per cent of the continent’s total jet fuel imports in July and reinforcing Nigeria’s emergence as a significant player in the global aviation fuel market.
Latest European import data compiled by global commodities intelligence firm Kpler show that more than 400,000 tonnes of jet fuel produced by the 700,000 barrels-per-day Dangote Petroleum Refinery were delivered into Europe during July. The refinery’s exports accounted for around one-fifth of Europe’s total jet fuel imports for the month, ahead of traditional suppliers including the United States.
The July performance follows an even stronger showing in June, when the refinery exported a record 466,000 tonnes of jet fuel to Europe, marking the first time Nigeria displaced the United States as the region’s leading supplier of imported aviation fuel.
The sustained performance highlights the refinery’s growing capacity to consistently supply one of the world’s most quality-sensitive fuel markets with aviation fuel that meets stringent international specifications.
Europe imported approximately 2.06 million tonnes of jet fuel in July, with Dangote Refinery contributing the largest single share of those imports, underscoring the facility’s increasing influence on international refined petroleum trade.
Industry analysts say the refinery is steadily reshaping established Atlantic Basin fuel trade routes by providing European buyers with a competitive and reliable alternative to long-standing suppliers in the United States, the Middle East and Asia.
Dangote Refinery’s strategic location on Nigeria’s Atlantic coastline, coupled with its large-scale processing capacity, modern refining technology and export infrastructure, has positioned it as a growing source of aviation fuel for international markets.
The refinery’s export momentum has also been supported by rising production levels. Jet fuel loadings at the Lekki export terminal reached a record 550,000 tonnes in June, while crude oil deliveries to the refinery increased to an all-time high of 660,000 barrels per day, providing the throughput needed to sustain expanding exports of refined petroleum products.
The latest export figures come amid changing global energy trade dynamics. While Europe continued to receive limited jet fuel supplies from Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Oman during July, supply concerns linked to geopolitical developments around the Strait of Hormuz have encouraged buyers to diversify sourcing strategies.
Against this backdrop, Dangote Refinery has strengthened its position as a dependable supplier of premium aviation fuel, enhancing Nigeria’s profile within the global refined products market and demonstrating the country’s growing capacity to compete in high-value downstream petroleum exports.
Beyond aviation fuel, the refinery has continued to expand exports of diesel, gasoline and other refined petroleum products to markets across Europe, Africa and other international destinations.
Commenting on the refinery’s growing international footprint, David Bird, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals, said the sustained export growth reflects the company’s commitment to supplying premium-quality petroleum products that meet global standards while strengthening Nigeria’s position as a net exporter of refined petroleum products.
The refinery’s continued success is widely viewed as a milestone for Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector, highlighting the country’s increasing role in global energy security, refined products trade and value addition within the hydrocarbon industry.
