- Major rehabilitation project expected to increase water production, improve operational efficiency and expand access to safe drinking water across Lagos State
The Lagos State Government has commenced another major phase of its ongoing investment in water infrastructure with the installation of new pumps at the Iju Headworks and Akute Water Intake Stations, a strategic intervention aimed at improving public water supply across the state.
Implemented through the Lagos Water Corporation (LWC), the project forms part of the administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s broader efforts to modernise critical water infrastructure, strengthen operational efficiency and ensure sustainable access to safe and potable water for millions of Lagos residents.
The installation of the new pumping systems is being undertaken under the “Rehabilitation of Iju Headworks and Akute Intake Station – Lots 1, 2 & 3,” a flagship infrastructure renewal initiative designed to upgrade key water production facilities, improve plant performance and increase water production capacity.
The project is a key component of the Lagos Water Corporation’s comprehensive eight-month rehabilitation programme for the Iju and Adiyan Water Treatment Plants, which commenced in February 2026 and is scheduled for completion in October 2026. The programme is fully funded by the Lagos State Government.
Speaking during the project’s kick-off meeting held earlier this year at the Corporation’s headquarters in Ijora, the Managing Director of the Lagos Water Corporation, Engr. Mukhtaar Tijani, described the rehabilitation programme as a transformational initiative aligned with the Corporation’s Strategic Business Plan and the Lagos State Government’s vision of delivering world-class public water services.
According to Tijani, the project focuses primarily on replacing and upgrading critical pumping systems and related infrastructure to restore optimal operational efficiency and strengthen the Corporation’s water production capacity.
He noted that the intervention reflects Governor Sanwo-Olu’s sustained commitment to revitalising Lagos’ water infrastructure and expanding residents’ access to reliable and sustainable public water supply.
The Managing Director also emphasised the importance of delivering the project to the highest engineering and quality standards, urging contractors and stakeholders to ensure timely completion.
“This project must not be business as usual. We want all hands on deck to ensure timely and successful delivery. Let this dream become a reality,” Tijani said.
Upon completion, the rehabilitation is expected to significantly enhance the operational performance of the Iju Headworks and Akute Water Intake Stations, increase water production capacity, reduce operational downtime and improve the reliability of water supply to communities across Lagos State.
The Lagos Water Corporation said the project reinforces its commitment to supporting the development agenda of the Lagos State Government through sustained investment in critical water infrastructure and the delivery of efficient, customer-focused and sustainable public water services.
The ongoing rehabilitation represents another milestone in the state’s long-term strategy to build a resilient water sector capable of meeting the growing demands of one of Africa’s fastest-expanding megacities while improving access to safe drinking water for millions of residents.
