The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Cosmopolitan University have agreed to formalise a strategic partnership that will leverage artificial intelligence (AI), satellite data and meteorological science to accelerate climate-smart solutions, digital agriculture, aviation research and climate resilience across Nigeria.
The collaboration, which will be formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), will focus on multidisciplinary research and innovation in climate-smart and digital agriculture for smallholder farmers, aviation research, staff exchange, data analytics, AI applications, and the use of weather and climate information to improve livelihoods.
The agreement was reached when the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, received the Vice Chancellor of Cosmopolitan University, Prof. Carl Adams, on a courtesy visit to the Agency’s headquarters on Monday.
Speaking during the visit, Prof. Anosike noted that both institutions share a common vision of translating scientific research into practical solutions that benefit society. He highlighted NiMet’s continued efforts in producing research-based weather and climate information to support national development, while commending the university for embracing emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, to build climate-ready and climate-resilient communities.
In his remarks, Prof. Adams reaffirmed the university’s commitment to developing the next generation of indigenous AI scientists and innovators. He said the institution is investing in AI-driven climate solutions powered by satellite data and advanced analytics to address emerging environmental and development challenges.
Both organisations agreed that closer collaboration between academia and public institutions is essential for strengthening climate adaptation, improving agricultural productivity, advancing aviation research and expanding the application of weather and climate intelligence across critical sectors of the economy.
The Vice Chancellor was accompanied on the visit by the Pro-Chancellor of Cosmopolitan University and other members of the institution’s senior management team.
