L–R: Dr. Sophia Horsfall, GM, External Relations & Sustainable Development, NLNG; Prof. Barth Nnaji, Advisory Board Chairman, The Nigerian Prize for Science & Innovation; Prof. Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, Advisory Board Chairman, The Nigeria Prize for Literature, other Prizes’ Advisory Board members and NLNG management staff at The Nigeria Prizes refreshed logos unveiling held in Lagos on Thursday.
The Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) company has revealed updated visual brand identities for its flagship awards: The Nigeria Prize for Literature, The Nigeria Prize for Science, and the newly established The Nigeria Prize for Creative Arts. The unveiling, held at a press briefing in Lagos, signals a refreshed approach to the presentation and communication of these longstanding national platforms for intellectual and creative achievement.
At the event, Sophia Horsfall, NLNG’s General Manager of External Relations and Sustainable Development, described the redesign as a strategic effort to maintain the prizes’ relevance while aligning their visual language with global standards. She noted that the updated logos aim to reinforce the role of literature, science, and the arts in supporting sustainable development and intellectual growth.
“For over two decades, The Nigeria Prizes have represented excellence and national aspiration. This redesign preserves the legacy of the awards while enhancing their visibility and alignment with contemporary design and global standards,” Horsfall said.
She highlighted that the Prizes are intended to underscore the importance of ideas in national development:
“Ideas shape societies, and societies that invest in ideas secure their future. These new identities reaffirm that literature, science, and innovation are essential to Nigeria’s progress.”
The Nigeria Prize for Literature logo is inspired by the visual of turning pages, rendered in layered green forms. The design aims to convey storytelling in motion, reflecting fiction, poetry, drama, and prose. The green palette is intended to suggest renewal, learning, and growth, while a gradient illustrates the journey of ideas from inception to fruition.
Prof. Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, Chairperson of the Advisory Board for The Nigeria Prize for Literature, said the design reflects the continuity and dynamism of Nigerian literature:
“The turning pages symbolize stories rooted in history but constantly renewed. The identity affirms literature as a dynamic force shaping thought, cultural memory, and imagination.”
The Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation logo features intersecting blue orbits that evoke atomic structures and celestial motion. Its circular composition highlights continuity in scientific inquiry, while the blue-lime palette reflects curiosity, intelligence, and exploration.
Prof. Barth Nnaji, Chair of the Advisory Board for the Science Prize, described the design as representative of the discipline and ambition inherent in scientific work:
“The energy in this logo reflects the spirit of questioning and exploration necessary for Nigeria’s industrial and scientific development.”
The Nigeria Prize for Creative Arts, introduced as part of NLNG’s expanded portfolio, is symbolized by a lime-green spiral, representing innovation, continuity, and creative momentum. The design is intended to reflect the breadth of artistic disciplines and the dynamic process of creation, while signaling optimism and originality.
The redesign aligns with NLNG’s broader corporate branding refresh, adopting a modern design approach that unifies the visual identity across all three Prizes. Since their establishment in 2004, the Literature and Science prizes have maintained a consistent visual identity, contributing to strong brand recognition. The updated designs build on this legacy, reflecting an evolution aimed at sustaining the Prizes’ prominence as national and international markers of intellectual and creative excellence.
The new visual identities collectively signal an intention to emphasize intellectual rigor, creative excellence, and the transformative potential of ideas, reinforcing the Prizes’ continued relevance in Nigeria’s cultural, scientific, and creative landscape.
