Dangote Refinery has reiterated its dedication to supplying Nigerians with premium-quality petrol (PMS) that meets international standards, reinforcing its vision of energy security for Nigeria and Africa.
At a recent media briefing in Lagos, David Bird, Managing Director and CEO of Dangote Refinery, highlighted the facility’s advanced design and operational flexibility, which allow sustained high output even during scheduled maintenance.
“Dangote Refinery delivers world-class fuels meeting Euro V specifications to the Nigerian market, marking a decisive shift from the era of substandard imports,” Bird said. “Our capacity to export refined petrol to Europe and jet fuel to the Middle East underscores the quality and global competitiveness of our products.”
He emphasized that the refinery’s scale, efficiency, and product quality position it to compete internationally while ensuring domestic supply. “This investment fundamentally transforms Nigeria’s energy, industrial, and economic landscape,” Bird added.
Operational Excellence and Market Impact
The refinery runs a 24-hour loading system, capable of evacuating over 1,000 trucks daily, ensuring uninterrupted nationwide distribution. Daily product offtake has occasionally exceeded 52 million litres, reflecting strong domestic demand and efficient logistics.
Bird noted that the increase in domestic refining capacity has mitigated the impact of global price fluctuations, helping maintain relatively stable pump prices across Nigeria. He also pointed to the crude-for-naira arrangement as a strategic tool to conserve foreign exchange and support the stability of the naira.
Looking forward, Bird disclosed plans for major expansion over the next three years, alongside investments in petrochemical products including polypropylene, base oils, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Preparations are also underway to list a portion of the refinery on the Nigerian Stock Exchange, allowing Nigerians to participate directly in its ownership.
A Continent-Building Investment
Describing Dangote Refinery as a “continent-building project,” Bird expressed pride in its transformative impact on Lagos and the broader Nigerian economy.
“It’s no exaggeration to say this is a continent-building project. Since joining in August, I stand on the shoulders of giants who have turned this part of Lagos into a potential world-scale industrial hub,” he said.
The refinery has delivered over 50 million litres of refined products daily in the latter half of 2025, occasionally surpassing 52 million litres. Bird attributed this achievement to the refinery’s unique design and the strategic foresight of Dangote Group founder, Alhaji Aliko Dangote.
“We are not a traditional refinery. Thanks to Alhaji Aliko Dangote’s vision, we operate as a complete merchant refining, blending, and trading platform. Our feedstock is 100% seaborne, giving us the flexibility to process a wide variety of Nigerian and alternative crude grades,” Bird said.
