A somber mood hangs over Epe Town in Lagos-Nigeria as residents continue to grapple with the shock and grief of a fatal truck accident along Hospital Road that claimed several lives on Monday January 12, sending ripples of sorrow through families, places of worship, and the wider community.
Amid the outpouring of grief, a prominent socio-cultural group in the town, Club Seventies Epe has added its voice to calls for reflection and action, describing the incident as a tragic reminder of the human cost of persistent road safety lapses. In a statement issued by the club’s President, Yusuf Yunus, and Secretary, Taoheed Oladehinde Sikiru, the group expressed deep condolences to families of the victims and solidarity with a community plunged into mourning.
The club said it was particularly heartbroken by accounts that some of those who lost their lives were worshippers who had left their homes in faith and hope, only to meet a sudden and violent end.
“This tragedy has plunged many families into indescribable pain, shattered dreams, and irreversible loss,” the statement read.
“Lives were cut short in a moment of terror and confusion, leaving behind a silence that is both deafening and unbearable.”
The group noted that the accident has cast a dark pall over Epe, uniting residents across social and religious lines in collective mourning.
“At this most painful and solemn hour, we extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families whose worlds have been forever altered,” the statement continued.
“No words can adequately measure the depth of your pain or heal wounds so suddenly inflicted. But you are not alone. We grieve with you. We stand with you.”
Beyond mourning, Club Seventies Epe framed the accident as a critical wake-up call for authorities, warning that continued neglect, weak enforcement, and inadequate traffic management could lead to further avoidable loss of life.
The group urged urgent intervention by the Federal Government, the Lagos State Government, and relevant Local Government Authorities to strengthen road safety measures in Epe and surrounding areas.
The statement specifically called on the Lagos State Government to establish and strictly enforce designated routes for trucks and articulated vehicles, stressing that the unchecked movement of heavy-duty vehicles through residential and pedestrian areas poses a persistent danger.
It also urged the Local Government Administration to intensify monitoring and ensure that heavy trucks are restricted to approved access roads, describing such measures as essential to safeguarding lives, property, and public order.
“As a community, we must draw strength from our unity, honour the sacred memories of the departed, and commit ourselves to ensuring that such a tragic and avoidable disaster never occurs again,” the statement concluded.
The club concluded by offering prayers for the eternal repose of the victims and calling for comfort and strength for families and loved ones left behind, even as demands for accountability and concrete road safety reforms continue to grow within the Epe community.
