Leadership transitions in the energy sector rarely pass quietly.
They mark the close of one chapter shaped by decisions taken under pressure, and the opening of another defined by expectation. On Friday in Abuja, Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) paused to reflect on such a moment, as the Company formally marked the end of Philip Mshelbila’s tenure as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer; bringing to a close more than four years of stewardship that carried the organisation through turbulence, transformation, and strategic renewal.
The send off ceremony followed the approval of the NLNG Board of Directors of the appointment of Engr. Adeleye Falade as the Company’s new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. Falade, who will assume office in April 2026, joins NLNG from Brunei LNG, where he currently serves as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.
Mshelbila will formally exit NLNG on 31 December 2025 to take up the position of Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Doha, Qatar.
The Abuja send-off was attended by NLNG Directors, executives of shareholder companies, senior public sector officials, leaders within Nigeria’s energy industry, members of NLNG’s management team, and representatives of various staff groups.
Speaking at the event, Olakunle Osobu, NLNG’s Deputy Managing Director, described Mshelbila as a leader of rare distinction—an accomplished professional whose career spans medicine, environmental health, strategic business leadership, and global gas diplomacy.
Osobu noted that Mshelbila assumed office at a time of extraordinary disruption, navigating the Company through the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, devastating floods that affected gas infrastructure, persistent pipeline vandalism, and repeated force majeure declarations by gas suppliers. These challenges were further compounded by the global energy market turbulence triggered by the Russia–Ukraine conflict. Despite these headwinds, Osobu said, NLNG remained firmly on course under Mshelbila’s leadership, advancing its sustainability objectives with resilience, innovation, and strategic clarity.
A defining legacy of Mshelbila’s tenure, Osobu noted, was his decisive push to diversify NLNG’s feed-gas supply base. Recognising the risks associated with dependence on a single supply chain, Mshelbila championed a strategic shift beyond the traditional shareholder joint-venture model. In August 2025, NLNG successfully negotiated and executed long-term Gas Supply Agreements (GSAs) with six third-party gas suppliers, securing an estimated 1,290 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) of feed-gas. The agreements represent a historic milestone and a fundamental recalibration of the Company’s supply strategy.
Osobu further highlighted Mshelbila’s emphasis on innovation, environmental stewardship, and emissions control, noting that his leadership inspired a renewed organisational commitment to safety, sustainability, and operational excellence. Through NLNG’s transformation programme, Mshelbila also laid the groundwork for long-term value creation and future resilience.
In her tribute, Sophia Horsfall, General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, praised Mshelbila’s leadership style and values-driven approach.
“Thank you for your selflessness, for the steadiness of your leadership, for the clarity of your vision, and for the values that guided your every step,” Horsfall said. “You led with humility, inspired excellence, and carried the weight of complex challenges with calm resolve. Long before sustainability became fashionable, you were already charting a clear and deliberate path.”
In his response, Mshelbila expressed deep appreciation to NLNG’s shareholders, Board of Directors, management, staff, and industry partners for their unwavering support throughout his tenure. He commended the Company’s strong culture of innovation, professionalism, and excellence, affirming that these values would guide him in his new international role.
As Secretary-General of the GECF, Mshelbila is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening dialogue between gas-producing and gas-consuming nations, while advancing the positioning of natural gas as a reliable and sustainable energy source within the evolving global energy transition.
