Agroween ’25: IRF, UNILAG to Promote Agricultural Literacy Among Students
The Intergenerational Rescue Foundation Inc. (IRF), in collaboration with the Department of Social Work, University of Lagos, says it is set to deepen students’ interest in agriculture through the Agroween ’25 festival and the Agroween Recognition Awards (ARA Awards).
The Chairperson of IRF and Convener of Agroween, Mrs. Bimbola Aghahowa, said this in a statement issued on Thursday in Lagos.
Aghahowa said the event would hold on Nov. 25, 2025, at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Lagos, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
She described Agroween ’25 as a dynamic festival designed to celebrate innovation and sustainability in food systems, agriculture, and community development.
According to her, the 2025 edition, themed “Sowing Seeds of Innovation,” will convene leaders in academia, agribusiness, food technology, and community development to foster dialogue and drive solutions for sustainable agriculture in Nigeria.
Aghahowa added that the ARA Awards would honour individuals making notable contributions to agricultural innovation, food security, and social impact.
Some of the expected honourees include former President Olusegun Obasanjo; environmentalist Prof. Desmond Majekodunmi; media leader Mrs. Funke Egbemode; philanthropist Mr. Tony Elumelu (CFR); Prof. Yile Adeleya; Prof. Funlola Oguwabi; the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Adelaja Odukoya; and Prof. Samuel Adejoh.
Aghahowa said Agroween ’25 was conceptualised to inspire sustainable food practices and support IRF’s “Food Not for Sale” theory, which promotes innovation as a pathway to food security.
“This year’s theme emphasises sustainable agriculture and community-driven solutions. By embracing innovation, we can bridge knowledge gaps, improve production, and strengthen food systems,” she said.
She noted that the event would serve as a platform for knowledge exchange, showcasing ideas, innovations, and networking opportunities for individuals and institutions working to advance food security.
Also speaking, the Head of the Department of Social Work, Prof. Samuel Adejoh, said Agroween ’25 was designed to counter agricultural illiteracy and equip students to make informed choices as citizens and consumers.
According to him, agricultural literacy includes understanding food production, processing, marketing, public policy, and the economic and environmental relevance of agriculture.
“Agricultural literacy is fundamental to how the public forms attitudes and makes decisions related to food, fibre, and environmental policies. Adults who lack this knowledge risk making poor choices that affect household well-being and national development,” he said.
Adejo said promoting agricultural awareness among students was essential for building responsible decision-makers and strengthening Nigeria’s long-term sustainability agenda.
Agroween ’25, organisers said, aims to catalyse positive change by connecting stakeholders across generations and sectors to spark new ideas, partnerships, and practical innovations for the health of communities and the environment.
