As world leaders, civil society, and climate activists gather for the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), Connected Advocacy, a leading Nigerian non-profit championing climate justice and community empowerment, is urging negotiators to center local voices, green skills, and climate-blended finance in global climate decisions.
According to the non profit, for frontline communities across the Niger Delta, the climate crisis is not theoretical — it is a lived reality.
Rising sea levels, oil pollution, and extreme weather events continue to destroy lives and livelihoods. Yet, says the organization, those most affected remain excluded from key climate discussions.
“Communities on the frontlines of climate change cannot continue to be left out of the rooms where decisions about their future are made”, said Prince Israel Orekha, Executive Director of Connected Advocacy. “COP30 must deliver justice, not promises; power, not pity”.
Orekha, a globally renowned climate justice advocate emphasized that Connected Advocacy’s presence at COP30 is to highlight the urgent need for climate solutions that are locally designed, globally supported, and equitably financed.
The organization is also promoting its World Green Skills Collaborative initiative, a platform connecting civil society, philanthropies, and private sector actors to advance community-led energy transition and green skills for youth and women.
The organization has demanded the following at COP30
- Climate Finance That Reaches the Grassroots — Ensure direct, simplified access for community-based and youth-led organizations.
- Local Design for Global Impact — Recognize and fund indigenous and local climate innovations.
- Green Skills for a Just Transition — Prioritize capacity-building for youth and women to participate in the clean energy economy.
- Environmental Justice & Accountability — Operationalize the Loss and Damage Fund with justice-centered compensation mechanisms.
- Meaningful Inclusion — Guarantee representation of frontline communities in national delegations and UNFCCC decision-making processes.
