Make clean environment your personal responsibility, NGO tasks community
Jody Kingsman Services (JKS), an NGO focused on climate action and environmental sustainability has called on Lagos residents to take responsibility for a cleaner Lagos.
Miss Shalom Asaah, Founder, JKS, made the call on Saturday during a clean up exercise at Ifelodun, Ogba, a suburb of Lagos.
Newsmen reports that the exercise is tagged “Cleaning Can Be Fun.”
Speaking during the second edition of the exercise held at Ifelodun Community, Ogba, Asaah emphasised that environmental cleanliness must begin with personal discipline and conscious daily habits.
“Until each person understands that keeping our environment clean is a personal duty, nothing will truly change,” she said.
She recalled her upbringing, noting how her mother taught her to properly manage waste even in public spaces.
“Growing up, my mom used to tell me: If you eat something on a bus, don’t throw it out the window — put it in your bag until you see a dustbin.
“That habit stuck with me,” she added.
She explained that the initiative, “Cleaning Can Be Fun” was launched in February 2025 in Oworonshoki after the team was shocked by the poor sanitation conditions observed in the area.
“We saw so much dirt in the communities and realised the need to do something — not just clean, but also educate people and raise awareness,” she said.
According to her, as recycling becomes part of Nigeria’s environmental culture, it is even more important for citizens to take cleanliness seriously.
“If we all become more conscious and intentional, it will benefit us individually, Lagos State, and Nigeria as a whole,” she said.
She expressed appreciation to community members who joined the cleanup, stressing that collective effort remains key to achieving a sustainable, cleaner environment.
Also speaking, Mr Lawrence Bassey, a member of the Ifelodun community, expressed gratitude to the team for coming to clean the community.
Bassey pledged to sustain the efforts of the NGO by ensuring that the community take responsibility for cleaning the environment regularly.
The climax of the event was a medical outreach to the elderly in the community by a team of medical personnel from the Red Cross Society.
