In a strategic move to bolster regional cooperation in climate and weather forecasting, the Director General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike, paid a working visit to the Directorate of General Meteorology (DGM) in the Kingdom of Morocco, led by Mohammed Dhkissi.
The visit occurred as a sideline during of the ongoing United Nations Systematic Observation Financing Facility (SOFF) workshop for Peer Advisors and Implementing Entities in Casablanca.
The high-level meeting, which featured a guided tour of Morocco’s meteorological facilities, focused on forging stronger collaboration between both countries in advancing AI-driven weather forecasting and early warning systems.
Both leaders agreed to draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize areas of mutual cooperation, including:
- Support for the implementation of the WMO Integrated Global Observing System (WIGOS) Centre in Abuja;
- Collaboration on establishing an instrument calibration centre in Nigeria;
- Exchange of technical expertise and ICT solutions for improved data management;
- Joint capacity building and training of instructors in both French and English to expand outreach across Africa;
- Knowledge exchange on Agricultural Meteorology, stakeholder engagement, and AI integration in numerical weather prediction.
Prof. Anosike and Mohammed Dhkissi reaffirmed the strong relationship already existing between NiMet and DGM; one that has fostered active participation in meteorological data exchange, regional stakeholder forums, and platforms such as ClimAfrica hosted by Morocco.
The renewed collaboration is expected to strengthen Africa’s collective response to climate variability, improve the accuracy of regional forecasts, and advance climate resilience across borders.
Both agencies also pledged continued participation in joint initiatives and cost recovery programmes aimed at sustaining weather and climate services vital to Africa’s sustainable development.
