In a move aimed at enhancing food security and improving local production, the Lagos State Agricultural Input Supply Authority (LAISA) has successfully trained over 500 farmers and fishermen in the Ikorodu Division. The intensive one-day session focused on equipping participants with innovative farming and fishing techniques tailored to their specific needs.
The capacity-building session and forum, held on Tuesday at the Ikorodu Local Government premises, marked a shift in the state’s approach to agricultural support.
In her keynote address, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, underscored the broader significance of the initiative. She stressed that food security is not merely an agricultural concern but is intrinsically linked to economic stability, public health, and urban resilience.
The Commissioner, who was represented by Mrs. Aramide Gansalo, the Director of Agribusiness, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, reinforced the government’s commitment to local producers.
“As a Government, we recognize that the journey to self-sufficiency starts with the right foundation. That foundation is quality inputs,” Ms. Olusanya said. “For our farmers, access to certified, high-yield seeds, appropriate fertilizers, and modern implements is non-negotiable for maximizing the meager resources available in our state. And that is where LAISA comes in”.
Mrs. Olufolake Oluyemi, the General Manager of LAISA, described the event as more than just a training, emphasising its role as a direct engagement platform.
Speaking on the theme, “Harvesting Success: Innovative Solutions for Lagos Farmers,” she stated, “We recognize that the challenges faced by farmers in Ikorodu are unique compared to those in Badagry or Epe. Therefore, the era of LAISA assuming it knows your needs is over. This forum is designed as both a capacity-building session and a platform for us to listen, learn, and co-create innovative solutions.”
The initiative received high praise from farmers and fishermen. Mr. Femi Oke, Chairman of the All Nigerian Farmers Association, Lagos State Chapter, commended LAISA and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems for consistently prioritising the welfare of farmers and fishermen. He urged all participants to maximize and optimize the practical lessons learned during the forum.
The event saw a strong turnout of dignitaries, including the Chairman of Ikorodu North Local Government, Hon. Abdul Lateef Ladega; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems; Mr. Emmanuel Audu and the Babaloja General of Ikorodu, Alhaji Folorunsho Alogba.
