Education fosters informed citizens, reduces poverty, and promotes equality, ultimately laying the foundation for a more prosperous and sustainable world – VCDF
As the world marked International Literacy Day, a renewed commitment to education came alive in Iko Town, Eastern Obolo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
Community Secondary School, once plagued by dilapidated infrastructure, has been given a new lease of life following the renovation and construction works undertaken by Vcare for Development Foundation (VCDF), in partnership with the Akwa Ibom State Government and supported by Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited (SEEPCO).
According to a statement by VCDF, the project delivered 18 renovated classrooms in four blocks, eight offices, a library, modern toilet facilities for male and female students, elevated walkways, two rehabilitated boreholes, and solar power installations.
Together, these upgrades represent more than bricks and mortar; they symbolize an investment in literacy, equality, and the empowerment of young people in rural Nigeria.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Prof. Ubong Essien Umoh, Commissioner for Education, described the initiative as a strong statement of partnership for development.
“I commend the foresight and commitment of Vcare for Development Foundation, alongside the support from SEEPCO, in making public schools more attractive. This initiative aligns with the vision of His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, under the broader Arise Agenda,” Prof. Umoh said, urging the community to safeguard the facilities against vandalism.
The Executive Chairman of the State Secondary Education Board, Dr. Ekaete Okon, echoed this sentiment, calling on teachers to use the upgraded facilities to improve learning outcomes.
“They have renovated and constructed new infrastructure for the school, which aligns with the education component of the Arise Agenda. I encourage the principal and staff to safeguard these facilities and put them to effective use,” Dr. Okon remarked.
For the school community, the upgrades have already sparked optimism.
Dr. Ekerette Akpan, Principal of the school, noted that the modern classrooms and learning facilities would improve both teaching and student performance. Yet, he appealed for further intervention to address flooding challenges through proper drainage.
Student leaders, represented by the head boy and head girl, described the renovated blocks as giving the school “a much-needed facelift.” Their gratitude reflected a renewed sense of pride and belonging in a school once overlooked.
Beyond infrastructure, the initiative underlines VCDF’s Model School Initiative Programme (MSI), designed to transform education in underserved communities by focusing on technical skills, inclusivity, and sustainability.
For SEEPCO, one of Africa’s leading exploration and production companies which has continually shown a strong commitment to promoting sustainable education within rural communities through VCDF and various other groundbreaking initiatives; the intervention reflects its broader Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments, particularly in advancing Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education).
The renovation at Iko Community Secondary School stands as a timely reminder of this year’s World Literacy Day theme: that literacy is a cornerstone for inclusion, human dignity, and sustainable development. By investing in rural schools, stakeholders like VCDF, SEEPCO, and the Akwa Ibom State Government are not only providing infrastructure but also laying the foundation for a more literate, equitable, and prosperous society.
The collaboration further reflects VCDF’s conviction that quality education including infrastructural support, teaching learning materials, and capacity building of teachers and enabling conducive learning environment for students is an investment not only in young people but also in the long-term sustainability and well-being of society.
