The Osun State Government has announced the appointment of Professor Chinwe Obuaku as the new Director General and Special Envoy to the Governor on Climate Change and Renewable Energy—an appointment widely regarded as a strategic boost to the state’s clean energy and sustainability ambitions.
Professor Obuaku, a United Nations–certified climate change expert, has long been a key voice in shaping Osun’s climate and renewable energy agenda. Before her official appointment, she worked closely with the state as a consultant, helping to develop policy frameworks, drive stakeholder engagement, and strengthen international partnerships that support Osun’s green transition.
Reacting to the appointment, Professor Obuaku described the opportunity as a privilege to deepen the state’s climate action efforts. She reaffirmed her commitment to championing policies and projects that advance sustainable development, expand renewable energy access, and deliver community-focused solutions capable of protecting both the environment and the local economy.
Her credentials underscore the weight of this new role. In March 2025, the Society for Climate Action in Nigeria (SCAN) recognized her with the Climate Action Ambassador Award for her notable leadership in renewable energy advocacy.
Earlier, at the 2024 German-Nigerian Business Forum, she presented early plans for Osun’s climate action strategy and electricity market bill—highlighting solar energy expansion, green hydrogen, and investor-driven sustainability as core focus areas.
More recently, during a Southwest stakeholders’ roundtable in June 2025, she unveiled Osun’s climate-smart investment portfolio, reinforcing the state’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most progressive subnational players in the clean energy space.
Her appointment has drawn praise from policymakers and industry stakeholders who see it as evidence of Osun’s determination to align local development with global climate priorities while accelerating its transition to a low-carbon, resilient economy.
As Professor Obuaku steps into this pivotal role, expectations are high. Her expertise and track record place her in a strong position to help Osun State emerge as a model of climate resilience, renewable energy leadership, and sustainability-driven growth across Nigeria and beyond.
