The Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) has raised a clarion call, declaring the climate crisis both a moral and ecological emergency. While Africa contributes the least to global carbon emissions, the continent continues to endure the most severe consequences—ranging from prolonged droughts and floods to devastating cyclones and desertification.
In response, the Catholic Church in Africa is demanding bold, fair, and urgent climate action, rooted in justice and solidarity, and led by African communities themselves.
Africa-Led Climate Solutions
SECAM insists that Africa must not remain a passive recipient of externally designed agendas. Instead, African nations and communities should be full architects of their ecological future. Rural communities, rich in indigenous knowledge and traditions, are described as “laboratories of integral ecology,” capable of shaping sustainable development pathways.
Nature- and Technology-Based Approaches
The Church’s vision emphasizes renewable energy, regenerative agriculture, and appropriate technologies that protect biodiversity while honoring cultural heritage. SECAM rejects “false solutions” such as harmful offsets or exploitative extractive projects, calling instead for genuine action that integrates social equity, human dignity, and care for creation.
“We cannot continue to make excuses,” the bishops warned. “What is needed is courage and determination to move away decisively from fossil fuels, embrace renewable sources of energy, and make genuine lifestyle changes for the sake of our common home.”
Scaling Renewable Energy
A strong emphasis is placed on decentralized renewable energy systems, particularly solar power. Such investments, SECAM argues, would not only reduce carbon emissions but also create decent jobs, empower women and youth, and address Africa’s crippling energy poverty.
Climate Finance with Justice
On climate finance, the Church has demanded that wealthy nations repay their “ecological debt” to the Global South. Funds for Loss and Damage and Adaptation must be made swiftly available, reaching vulnerable communities directly and building resilience rather than dependency.
For SECAM, climate finance is not charity but justice: compensation for communities already suffering the impacts of climate change, despite bearing little responsibility for causing it.
Adaptation and Resilience
Adaptation efforts, the bishops stress, must prioritize food security, clean water access, and the protection of livelihoods—especially for the poor and marginalized. Faith communities across Africa stand ready to mobilize, educate, and accompany those most affected by the crisis.
A Moral Imperative and Global Solidarity
For SECAM, climate action is ultimately a spiritual imperative. The bishops insist that the expansion of fossil fuels must stop, and that clean, renewable energy should be advanced in ways that respect cultures, protect biodiversity, and safeguard the dignity of communities.
Quoting Laudato Si’ and Laudate Deum, the bishops reminded the world: “The earth herself, burdened and laid waste, is among the most abandoned and maltreated of our poor.”
SECAM’s Commitment
- Grounded in Catholic social teaching, SECAM has pledged to:
- Promote ecological conversion in every parish, school, and diocese;
- Advocate at COP30 and other global platforms for a just phase-out of fossil fuels;
- Establish an Ecclesial Observatory on Climate Justice to track climate pledges;
- Partner with ethical actors to build a green and resilient Africa.
A Rising Moral Voice
With this declaration, SECAM positions Africa not as a victim, but as a moral voice and a driver of its own transformation. For the bishops, justice, solidarity, and care for creation are non-negotiable—and urgent global action is needed to protect both people and planet.
