Seplat Energy Plc, Nigeria’s leading independent energy company, in partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has recorded a groundbreaking achievement in the country’s energy sector: the successful delivery of the first-ever domestic supply of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) – Butane from the Bonny River Terminal (BRT) in Rivers State.
The milestone supply involved the loading of 12,600 metric tons of LPG, marking a decisive shift in Nigeria’s energy landscape. Historically, all LPG from the Bonny River Terminal was exported, leaving the local market heavily dependent on imports to meet cooking gas demand.
This breakthrough underscores Seplat’s determination to strengthen Nigeria’s domestic energy security and reduce reliance on costly imports. It also represents a key moment in the company’s strategy to increase the availability of clean, locally sourced LPG for Nigerian households.
Seplat Energy has also invested in new infrastructure to ensure sustainable supply. Its recently constructed 300 MMscfd ANOH Gas Plant in Imo State and 90 MMscfd Sapele Gas Plant in Delta State both include LPG production units capable of delivering 120MT/day and 163MT/day respectively. Both plants are scheduled to come fully onstream in Q4 2025, positioning Seplat as a major player in expanding clean cooking energy across the country.
The significance of this move cannot be overstated. Over 80% of Nigerian households still rely on traditional cooking fuels such as firewood and kerosene, which not only harm the environment but also pose severe health risks. By boosting access to LPG, Seplat and NNPCL are directly contributing to lowering greenhouse gas emissions, reducing indoor air pollution, and improving health outcomes for millions of families.
