As part of a transformative initiative to promote early cancer detection and improve women’s health, Vcare for Development Foundation (VCDF) conducted a 2-day free breast and cervical cancer screening for women from Makoko and environs.
Hosted on the 8th – 9th of August, this exercise was organised by VCDF in partnership with Sebeccly Cancer Care and Support Centre and the Nigerian Red Cross, Lagos State Chapter, and supported by Sterling Oil Exploration & Energy Production Co. Ltd. (SEEPCO),
The outreach provided vital healthcare access to over 200 women, delivering hope, relief, and a renewed focus on preventive care.
For many attendees, it marked their first-ever cancer screening. Under shaded canopies, women listened attentively as healthcare professionals shared insights on the dangers of late detection and demonstrated self-examination techniques. One by one, they entered the screening areas—emerging with a sense of relief and a stronger commitment to prioritising their health.
In Nigeria, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, while cervical cancer ranks as the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women aged 15–44. In underserved communities like Makoko, systemic barriers such as cost and limited healthcare access often delay diagnosis and treatment, with devastating consequences.
“This programme is a blessing,” shared one participant who attended alongside her sister. “I’ve never done a cervical screening before. Now I know my status and how to check myself for signs of breast cancer. It gives me peace of mind.”
The medical team, which included breast and medical oncologists, nurses, and trained volunteers, conducted clinical breast exams, Pap smears, ultrasound screenings, and other essential diagnostics. Each woman received personalised counselling, and those needing further evaluation were referred for specialist follow-up care.
Philip Ukemezia, VCDF Programme Manager, emphasised the importance of meeting women where they are: “By bringing these services directly into communities, we eliminate barriers, foster trust, and empower more women to take proactive steps toward their health.”
Dr. Omolola Salako, Founder of Sebeccly Cancer Care, echoed the message: “We are proud to extend quality cancer care to hundreds of women. Early detection is critical—catching cancer early significantly improves outcomes and reduces the risk of progression.”
This impactful outreach demonstrated the power of combining medical expertise, grassroots mobilisation, and corporate social responsibility. Together, VCDF and its partners are reshaping healthcare access and outcomes for women in Nigeria’s most vulnerable areas.
For the women of Makoko, the event offered more than medical services—it served as a powerful reminder: their health matters, and so do their lives.

I’m going to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a tough time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your layout seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something unique. P.S Apologies for being off-topic but I had to ask!
I?ll immediately grab your rss as I can not in finding your email subscription link or e-newsletter service. Do you’ve any? Please allow me recognise in order that I may just subscribe. Thanks.

I do love the manner in which you have presented this matter and it does indeed offer me some fodder for thought. Nevertheless, coming from what precisely I have witnessed, I simply trust as other comments pile on that men and women continue to be on issue and don’t embark on a tirade of some other news du jour. Still, thank you for this exceptional piece and though I can not concur with it in totality, I value your perspective.
