An environmental watchdog, the Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD) has urged the Abia State government and other relevant authorities to embark on early preparedness and immediate action to mitigate against expected flooding in Abia State.
This advisory was given as the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) issues fresh warnings for residents in flood-prone areas of Abia State to relocate immediately due to imminent flooding expected to hit parts of the state.
The alert comes on the heels of forecasts by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), which predict higher-than-normal rainfall and increased flood risks across several local government areas.
The NSCDC, through a statement issued by Abia State Commandant Dr. Akinsola Aderemi and signed by Public Relations Officer DSC Doreen Udugwu, identified nine high-risk LGAs: Aba North, Aba South, Ukwa East, Ukwa West, Umuahia North, Obingwa, Ugwunagbo, Isiala Ngwa North, and Osisioma Ngwa.
Commandant Aderemi confirmed that the Corps has activated its Disaster Management Unit and is working with local government officials to conduct statewide sensitization campaigns and community outreach in all 17 LGAs.
“We are calling on all residents in vulnerable areas to relocate immediately. The risks are real, and preparedness can save lives,” Aderemi stated, adding that NSCDC officers are already on the ground to assist with evacuation and awareness efforts.
Responding to the NSCDC’s warning, FENRAD re-echoed the urgency, emphasizing the need for a coordinated multi-agency response.
FENRAD Executive Director, Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, called on the Abia State Government to take proactive measures, including activating emergency shelters, clearing drainage systems, and issuing localized early warnings.
“Floods are no longer seasonal surprises; they are predictable disasters. What’s needed now is not just awareness, but action. Communities must prepare, and the government must lead with urgency and empathy,” Nwafor said.
FENRAD also advised residents to stay informed through official channels, avoid waterways during heavy rains, and report rising water levels to the appropriate authorities.
The organization reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property while calling on community leaders, religious bodies, and media outlets to support ongoing preparedness efforts.
